Namibia North/West Adventure
A more adventurous route for travellers who want Etosha, Damaraland, Kaokoland, Epupa Falls and the wild north-west, planned with careful attention to distance, road conditions and support.
Remote, rewarding and planned with care
The north-west is rewarding, but it needs more careful planning than a standard highlights route. Distances are longer, services are further apart and the best route depends on season, vehicle choice, traveller confidence and accommodation availability.
A route for confident explorers
This route should be customised around road conditions, fuel planning, accommodation availability and the traveller’s experience. It is not a one-size-fits-all package.

Suggested day-by-day route
This is a base structure for discussion. The final route should be adapted around road conditions, the traveller’s experience, fuel planning and preferred accommodation.
Windhoek to Otjiwa / central Namibia
Start north from Windhoek and settle into an easy first night. This reduces pressure before the longer northern and western sections.
Otjiwa to Etosha
Enter Etosha and begin the wildlife section of the journey. The day can be planned around camp or lodge location and gate timing.
Etosha National Park
Self-drive game viewing between selected waterholes, with advice on timing, distance and where not to overextend the day.
Etosha to western / northern edge
Move towards the less-travelled side of the route, positioning for Kaokoland, Ovahimba cultural visits or remote scenery depending on conditions.
Towards Epupa Falls
Continue north-west to the Kunene River. This is a longer, more remote travel section and should be planned carefully around fuel, road conditions and daylight.
Epupa Falls and Kunene River
Time for the falls, viewpoints, local culture and a slower day on the river. This is one of the most memorable northern stops when the route is planned well.
Epupa to Opuwo / Kamanjab area
Begin moving south again, with flexibility for cultural stops, supply points and a realistic overnight based on the chosen accommodation style.
Damaraland / Palmwag / Twyfelfontein area
Enter the rugged north-west landscapes. Possible focus areas include desert-adapted wildlife, dramatic scenery, conservancy areas and Twyfelfontein.
Twyfelfontein and Damaraland activities
Visit rock engravings, living museum options, geological sites or lodge-based nature activities. The day can be kept active or relaxed.
Damaraland to Swakopmund
Travel towards the coast via scenic gravel roads, Brandberg views or small settlements. Arrive in Swakopmund for a comfortable coastal night.
Swakopmund activities
Choose from desert, ocean or adrenaline activities, or simply use the day to rest after the remote north-west section.
Swakopmund to Windhoek
Return to Windhoek or extend the route south if travellers want to combine it with Sossusvlei.
Activity and focus areas
- Etosha self-drive game viewing
- Otjiwa as a central stop before or after Etosha
- Epupa Falls viewpoints and Kunene River scenery
- Ovahimba cultural visits where appropriate
- Damaraland landscapes and desert-adapted wildlife areas
- Twyfelfontein rock engravings
- Swakopmund desert and ocean activities
- Optional guided support on remote sections
Important planning note
The North/West Adventure should not be sold as a fixed one-size-fits-all package. It works best as a customised itinerary because season, vehicle, traveller confidence and accommodation availability can change the safest and most enjoyable route.
