Namibia Self Drive Adventure
A classic Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha route, planned with local guidance, practical road advice and either camping or lodge accommodation.
Classic Namibia highlights, planned properly
This itinerary is designed for travellers who want the freedom of driving themselves, but still want the reassurance that the route, timing, accommodation and practical details have been checked by someone who knows Namibia properly.
A balanced first-time Namibia route
The structure can be tightened into 10 days or relaxed into 12 to 14 days. The route gives travellers desert, coast, Damaraland scenery and Etosha wildlife without making the trip feel generic.

Suggested day-by-day outline
The exact number of days can be adjusted. A 10 day route is possible, 12 days is more comfortable, and 14 days gives more time for photography, families or slower travel.
Windhoek arrival
Meet in Windhoek, collect the vehicle, check the route pack and overnight close to the capital. Paul can brief travellers on road conditions, fuel stops, park timing and practical self-drive questions.
Windhoek to Sossusvlei area
Drive south-west into the Namib Desert. The route introduces gravel-road driving, open landscapes and the first desert overnight. Camping and lodge versions can be planned.
Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Sesriem
Early start for the dunes, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon. The day can be kept flexible for photography, walking and a relaxed desert afternoon.
Sossusvlei to Swakopmund
Travel via Solitaire and the Gaub and Kuiseb passes towards the coast. The scenery changes from dunes and gravel plains to the Atlantic coastline.
Swakopmund activities
A flexible coastal day. Options include Sandwich Harbour, Living Desert tour, catamaran trips from Walvis Bay, kayaking, quad biking, scenic flights or a slower rest day.
Swakopmund to Twyfelfontein / Damaraland
Head north through the Erongo and Damaraland landscapes. Possible stops include Brandberg views, local villages, rock formations and desert-adapted wildlife areas.
Twyfelfontein and Damaraland
Visit the Twyfelfontein rock engravings, Damara Living Museum, Burnt Mountain or Organ Pipes. The day can be adapted to lodge activities or a quieter scenic drive.
Damaraland to Etosha
Drive towards Etosha National Park. Depending on the route and accommodation, enter through the south-west or southern gate and enjoy the first afternoon game drive.
Etosha National Park
Self-drive game viewing between waterholes. Paul can advise on realistic routes, gate times, rest camps and how to plan the day without rushing.
Etosha to Otjiwa / central Namibia
Leave Etosha and break the return journey at Otjiwa or another central stop. This makes the final drive to Windhoek easier and gives time for a relaxed last night.
Otjiwa to Windhoek
Return to Windhoek, hand back the vehicle and connect with onward travel. Shorter versions can end here, while 12 to 14 day versions add more time in Swakopmund, Damaraland or Etosha.
Activities that can be added
- Swakopmund Living Desert tour
- Sandwich Harbour or coastal 4×4 excursion
- Walvis Bay catamaran or kayaking
- Twyfelfontein rock engravings
- Damara Living Museum
- Etosha waterhole route planning
- Otjiwa activities or a relaxed stop before Windhoek
- Optional guided sections where useful
